The MS Society and Parkinsons Society have been instrumental in getting classes started. They have also developed many others across the country. This is a new wave: No more ‘ oh I’m so sorry about your diagnosis sit here and have a little rest!’ Now we know, getting going with exercise is the only answer that gives really good results with really fabulous side effects.
Retain cognitive ability, Prevent falls, Decelerate neurological deterioration Manage pain, Shape your disease Fight fatigue Exercise is medicine. The benefits of this medicine are all of the above PLUS stronger muscles, better posture and a healthy dose of endorphins. All good! Thornbury Leisure Centre are hosting us, providing exercise classes or individual exercise sessions for specialist populations. Join others experiencing exercise in a managed way, supervised by a specialist, senior, neurological physiotherapist. Talk to me: if you are not sure this is for you, just please ask. I can also offer one to one personal training, if you need to get comfortable in the gym before joining the group. If you think you know your way around the gym may I ask When did you last change your program? Is it tailored for you? Is it pushing you? I want to help you make the time and effort you put in to be as effective as possible. I realise 1) You don’t want it to be a waste of your time – it needs to be worthwhile, hard enough to be worth making the effort to come to, not so hard you can’t participate in it at all. 2) It has to be fun, so you feel able to come back and with a like-minded group of people. Exercise is likely to be more effective working with a buddy, even if the ‘buddy’ is someone you compete against! The competition is really just you trying to be the best you can be. Come week to week, for a season or for a tune up to improve your prognosis. |

"Why should I, I've got enough on my plate?"
It is a tricky one sometimes to quantify, I absolutely know exercise is beneficial to retaining cognitive ability, preventing falls, retaining muscle strength , keeping on your feet for longer. How can we measure? The falls you don’t have, the extra years you remained at work, the care you didn’t need , the voice you retained, the muscles that didn’t shorten , the muscles that didn’t weaken , the care you didn’t need – and who wants to think about this stuff anyway? Ask yourself “What are you waiting for? Sometimes it is easier not to think about this stuff, I understand that and I would love to wait until you are ready, but when are you going to be ready? I can be more effective treating people if they come to me before problems develop. In truth the whole population of this country (including me) should be working towards better health, not many do put the effort in, lots of people are getting away with it for now unscathed BUT ARE YOU? The PD and MS society and I have a mountain of evidence to show your occupational health team at work. This can to support those with diagnoses taking an hour out of work for exercise to improve quality of life and quality of health. Where, when and how? We have a structure that we would like to adhere to but the level of the class, how many classes run and at what time has to fit around the individual people involved. We began this season of classes in May 2016 on Tuesday afternoons (when the gym is quiet) 6 with the group of people who applied for the first 6 places. 6 people is a full class so then we set up the next class and so on - I would also like to run a high level class available for those of working age perhaps at lunchtime or after work to really test the research findings about high intensity exercise keeping people in work longer. The data (no personal data) baseline assessment and a subsequent assessment will, with your permission, be accessible to the societies and a local consultant to add to the body of research going on worldwide and help in the research to find a cure. |
